Metro
The Minsk metro was opened in 1984 and has 25 stations over two lines. A single journey costs 600br. Buy a small plastic token (zheton) from the ticket office, drop it into the machine and wait for the green light before you proceed.
The metro runs from approximately 5am to 1am every day of they year. Train run every 2-4 minutes most of the day but be prepared for a wait of up to 10 minutes late at night.
The blue line (Moskovskaya, Московская) runs the length of Minsk’s main thoroughfare Prospekt Nezavisimosti. This is the line that most tourists will use at some point.
The red line (Avtozavodskaya, Автозаводская) runs from the working-class factory region in the south-east of the city to the more prosperous new suburbs to the west. The names of the stops on this line really do reflect the age and the prosperity of the regions they represent. To the south-east you’ll find ‘Tractor factory’, ‘Automobile factory’, ‘Proletarian’ and ‘First of May’. To the west there’s the more inspiring ‘Youth’, ‘Sporting’, ‘Pushkin’ and ‘Stony Hill’.
